TON finalizes in 0.6s, 6,000x faster than Bitcoin
Pavel Durov reported The Open Network finalizes transactions in 0.6 seconds after a Catchain 2.0 upgrade, placing TON ahead of other Layer 1 chains including Bitcoin.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov circulated a report saying The Open Network (TON) reaches finality in 0.6 seconds following a recent mainnet upgrade. The figure was published after TON’s Catchain 2.0 upgrade, which reduced block times to about 400 milliseconds and pushed transaction finality below one second on April 10.
Finality is the point at which a transaction is considered secure against reorganization. Durov’s report ranked Layer 1 blockchains by finalization time and placed TON at the top of the list and Bitcoin at the bottom. Bitcoin’s roughly one-hour finality in the report is based on the common six-confirmation convention paired with 10-minute block intervals, producing an approximate 6,000-fold difference in finalization time between TON and Bitcoin.
The report listed finality times for other chains as well. Avalanche, BNB Smart Chain and Sui confirmed transactions in under two seconds. Hedera, the XRP Ledger and Stellar recorded finality in under five seconds. Solana registered about 13 seconds, TRON about one minute, and Ethereum roughly 13 minutes. Litecoin needed 15 minutes, Monero about 20 minutes, and Cardano was listed at about one day.
Durov also disclosed that Telegram has become TON’s largest validator, staking roughly 2.2 million TON, a position valued near $2.9 million at the time of the post. Telegram described the validator role as intended to balance other large operators and to make it easier for major participants to join the validator pool without concentrating control in a single actor.
The report noted staking rewards at about 20 percent and said competition for those rewards has increased the share of supply locked in validation. That dynamic reduced the circulating supply and tightened available trading liquidity for the token.
Critics flagged that Telegram’s stake could approach a quarter of total validator power, a concentration that raises questions about governance and decentralization. Toncoin’s market price rose sharply after the validator update was posted.
