OpenAI launches $4B deployment company to embed FDEs

OpenAI launched the OpenAI Deployment Company with $4 billion in backing to place Forward Deployed Engineers in client firms and will acquire Tomoro, adding about 150 FDEs.

OpenAI launched the OpenAI Deployment Company with $4 billion in initial backing to place Forward Deployed Engineers inside client organizations and announced an agreement to acquire applied AI consultancy Tomoro, which will add roughly 150 FDEs to the unit. The announcement appeared in a company blog post.

The new subsidiary is a partnership between OpenAI and 19 global investment firms, consultants and systems integrators. Private equity firm TPG is the lead partner, with Advent, Bain Capital and Brookfield listed as co-lead founding partners.

OpenAI described Forward Deployed Engineers as technical staff who embed within client teams to identify where AI can have the greatest impact, redesign workflows and integrate models with existing software and hardware. FDEs are intended to work alongside business leaders, operators and frontline staff to support production deployments that run day-to-day operations.

Tomoro is an applied AI consulting firm. OpenAI announced the acquisition will add about 150 applied engineers to the Deployment Company. Financial terms for the Tomoro deal and additional operational details beyond the $4 billion commitment were not disclosed.

OpenAI said the Deployment Company will operate globally through partner firms and embedded teams, focusing on complex environments that require close collaboration between engineers and frontline staff to connect models to legacy systems and move projects from pilots into production.

The launch comes as OpenAI faces growing enterprise competition. The company missed some internal targets for revenue and weekly active users in early 2026. Days earlier, Anthropic announced a $1.5 billion enterprise initiative backed by Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman and Goldman Sachs to place its Claude model directly inside portfolio companies.

In its blog post, OpenAI wrote that FDEs will work closely with business leaders, operators and frontline teams to identify where AI can have the biggest impact, redesign organizational infrastructure and turn those gains into durable systems.
