Ericsson: Firms Need Multiple Networks for Resilience

Three and Ericsson launched a managed 5G service for businesses; Ericsson VP Paul McHugh said firms require multiple connectivity types for true network resilience.

Three and Ericsson have launched a managed 5G service for businesses. The service provides a commercially supported private mobile layer that companies can use alongside fixed fiber and WiFi connections.

Paul McHugh, Ericsson’s vice president of EMEA sales, discussed the service and network resilience during a podcast interview.

He argued that organisations increasingly run core services and processes on connected technology, so gaps in mobile or other links can affect operational efficiency and outcomes.

McHugh warned that adding more physical lines does not always provide resilience if those lines terminate at the same local exchange. He added, ‘To achieve true resilience in a network, you actually need a variety of types of connectivity.’

He pointed to sectors such as remote sites, mobile workforces, industrial automation and services requiring real-time data exchange as most at risk from mobile outages.

The managed 5G service is offered as an option for businesses that do not want to build and operate private mobile networks. Ericsson has promoted private 5G and partner ecosystems as elements of broader infrastructure strategies.

Three and Ericsson position the service as a commercially supported mobile layer companies can add alongside fixed-line and WiFi options to reduce single points of failure.
