Phil Brown, chief executive of Clearstream Banking, won Global Custodian’s Industry Person of the Year at the Leaders in Custody event after a live vote by 300 attendees. He received a standing ovation when he took the stage, thanked colleagues and peers, and praised his fellow nominees.

Brown was shortlisted with Fiona McNally of BNY, Isabelle Delorme of Euroclear and Mark Austin of Northern Trust.

Under Brown’s leadership, Clearstream launched the D7 platform and worked on digitizing parts of the Eurobond market. Clearstream enabled the first use of offshore Chinese government bonds for initial margin segregation, completed its first tri-party repo transaction in Taiwan, and migrated a global broker-dealer and one of Europe’s largest neo-brokers to its European central securities depository platform.

Brown took part in industry conferences and associations on settlement cycles and cross-border market structure. He addressed operational and regulatory questions related to Europe’s transition to a T+1 settlement timetable and spoke publicly on those topics over the past 12 months.

The Industry Person of the Year award follows Brown’s GC Legend award in 2018. The Leaders in Custody award is decided by attendee vote.
