China Media Group pays $60M for 2026 World Cup rights

China Media Group agreed May 15 to buy mainland China rights for the 2026 World Cup for $60 million, far below FIFA’s initial $250–$300 million ask.

China Media Group signed a contract on May 15 to acquire broadcast rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in mainland China for $60 million. The agreement also covers the 2027, 2030 and 2031 tournaments.

The pact covers free-to-air television, streaming and mobile platforms and requires 4K and 8K feeds. It was finalized 27 days before the June 11 tournament opener in North America. The 2026 edition will include roughly 50% more matches than the 2022 tournament.

FIFA began negotiations seeking $250–$300 million for the China territory but reduced its demands during talks, with the final figure matching what China paid for the 2022 World Cup.

China Media Group is the parent of the state broadcaster and the primary holder of major international sports rights inside mainland China. The broadcaster typically operates with an internal rights budget of $60–$80 million, according to people familiar with its finances, which limited the price it was prepared to pay.

Two factors reduced the value of the rights in China. China’s men’s national team did not qualify for the tournament, lowering domestic interest. Many matches are scheduled in North America at times that fall between midnight and 6 a.m. in Beijing, cutting into prime-time viewing and advertiser value.

The timing of the agreement left limited time for Chinese broadcasters and commercial partners to plan promotions and ad sales. Rights distribution in some large markets also remained incomplete weeks before kickoff.

Broadcasters and rights partners must now prepare transmission and commercial plans for a tournament with more matches and a wider geographic footprint. The contract’s technical requirements respond to demand from Chinese platforms for ultra-high-definition coverage even as scheduling and audience factors constrained the price.
