OpenAI to reshape ChatGPT into agents-and-coding superapp

OpenAI will redesign ChatGPT into a “superapp” emphasizing AI agents and Codex coding tools to boost revenue ahead of a possible IPO.
OpenAI is redesigning ChatGPT into a “superapp” that centers on AI agents and integrated coding tools as the company prepares for a possible initial public offering. People familiar with the plans say the product will move beyond a chatbot-first experience.
Leaders plan to fold the company’s Codex coding capabilities into the ChatGPT interface and promote user-created agents that complete tasks. Small changes to the app and website are expected in the coming weeks to guide users to coding tools, image generation, third-party apps and task-focused agents.
Executives view chat primarily as a sign-up gateway rather than the main revenue source. The redesign aims to convert a large free user base into paying customers by highlighting tools that can be sold or licensed. ChatGPT reaches about one billion monthly users globally, with roughly two million business customers. OpenAI reported revenue of about $20 billion for 2025, up from $6 billion the prior year.
The new interface will focus on building a personal agent that can assist with work tasks and everyday life. The agent will be available across devices, including in-car systems. OpenAI plans to make it easier for customers to create custom agents with Codex and to link those agents with other services.
Over the last 18 months, OpenAI has expanded enterprise sales and introduced a consultancy product to help companies deploy its tools. The company has also closed large infrastructure deals with partners such as Oracle. OpenAI recently ended work on a separate video generation app, Sora, to concentrate resources on the superapp project.
The rollout will be incremental rather than a single overhaul. Sources expect a series of updates that steer users to paid features and enterprise products while expanding agent capabilities and integrating developer-focused tools.
An employee described the strategic shift bluntly as “chat is dead.” Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar characterized the company’s 2025 revenue growth as “never-before-seen.”
Competition in the large-language-model market has intensified. A rival has filed confidentially to go public and has focused on monetization strategies. Jenny Xiao, a partner at Leonis Capital and a former OpenAI researcher, noted that OpenAI and competitors are converging on revenue-focused approaches as they prepare for potential public offerings.
